What is Citrin®

In 1991, Citrin was introduced to the health food industry as the first all-natural plant extract standardized for hydroxycitric acid. This unique extract comes from premium, hand-harvested, Garcinia cambogia fruits grown in selected regions of southern India. The active principle of Citrin®, hydroxycitric acid, is in the rind of Garcinia cambogia.

What is HCA?

HCA stands for (-)-hydroxycitric acid. Hoffman-LaRoche, an international pharmaceutical company, and Brandeis University researchers began investigating HCA in the early 1970's. They found that the (-) form of HCA was a potent and competitive inhibitor of citrate lyase, an enzyme found primarily in the liver which is vital in regulating fat metabolism.

How does HCA work?

Fatty acids are the building blocks of fats and lipids. At the cellular level, (-)HCA molecules "trick" the citrate lyase enzyme. The receptor sites of citrate lyase enzymes are filled with (-)HCA. This means fewer fatty acids are synthesized, making less fat available for cellular storage. This results in less body fat build-up in the liver and adipose (fat) tissue. Increased amounts of energy at the cellular level are then available to more rapidly degrade free fatty acids.

Is this all?

No... (-)HCA suppresses appetite thus reducing food intake. When you consume food, the body begins breaking down carbohydrates into glucose (a necessary form of sugar). The liver functions to ensure that the blood continually has adequate glucose to fuel the brain with energy. Excess glucose molecules would normally break down into fat or cholesterol. However, (-)HCA temporarily inhibits the citrate lyase enzyme and excess glucose is converted to glycogen in the liver. When glucose and glycogen reach a certain level, the brain gets a signal of "fullness", suppressing appetite and reducing the desire for more food.

The benefits of (-)HCA found in Citrin® are two-fold:

  • It inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids in the liver, and,
  • It promotes an increased availability of glycogen in the liver, thus sending a "full" signal to the brain sooner.

How was Citrin® developed?

In late 1990, Muhammed Majeed, a Ph.D. Pharmacist, and past senior R&D staff member for several large U.S. pharmaceutical companies, came across the Brandeis University and Hoffman-LaRoche studies during routine literature research. As a native of southern India, he readily identified the Garcinia cambogia fruit as the ideal source of naturally occurring hydroxycitric acid. After nearly a year of trial and error, a proprietary process was developed that succeeded in stabilizing (-)HCA using Calcium.

Where and how is Citrin® harvested?

While there are several hundred species of Garcinia, Citrin® is made from only the finest Garcinia cambogia fruits available; those growing in the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in southern India. Harvesting at the peak of ripeness assures a maximum amount of (-)HCA per fruit. Our fruits are organically grown and wild crafted by natives of India living in the region.

Has Citrin® been studied in humans?

Yes. The rind of Garcinia cambogia fruits have been used for centuries in southern India as a flavoring agent and food preservative. With such a long history of food consumption, (-)HCA has shown no acute toxicity or side effects. All clinical studies involving (-)HCA from a standardized Garcinia cambogia extract have been performed using Citrin®. This makes Citring the only clinically proven (-)HCA product.

How is Citrin® used?

Citrin® has been used in tablets, capsules, chewable wafers, powdered drink mixes and even gourmet cookies. Clinical studies showed that 1500 mg of Citrin® a day, formulated with a trace amount of chromium, worked extremely well; nearly three times better than the placebo in people 15% to 45% overweight. (Note: Both sets of subjects were on a simple-to-follow, low-fat diet). On a daily basis, Citrin® has been used effectively in 500 mg doses three times a day, 30 minutes to an hour before each meal. While animal studies suggest that up to six grams of (-)HCA (12 grams of Citrin®) a day is safe for human consumption, clinical studies have shown Citrin® to be effective in smaller quantities.

With Citrin®, you can be sure.

Citrin® is prepared under strict adherence to good manufacturing practices. Our facility is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical and microbiological instrumentation to determine and verify potency. Upon arrival in the U.S., samples are sent to an independent laboratory for additional analysis and further verification. Our proprietary extraction process assures a consistent, high quality, lactone-free product from batch to batch.

Fat, Good Habits and Citrin®

Today, people are well aware of the cardiovascular dangers of high-fat diets. Many people know that obesity predisposes them to diabetes, hypertension, and possibly cancer among other conditions. "Quick fix" diet gimmicks rarely, if ever, provide lasting benefits. Strategies for weight management must be realistic and sensible. The goal of a sensible weight-management program is to prevent lipogenesis the formation of new fat. Dietary modification and moderate exercise are important for reducing cholesterol and body fat. These two steps, coupled with daily supplementation of Citrin®, go a long way in achieving a healthier, happier you.

Why Citrin® is the industry standard

SABINSA CORPORATION, through a proprietary process, was the first to succeed commercially in stabilizing (-)HCA from its natural source, Garcinia cambogia. Citrin® set the industry standard in 1991, with a minimum 50% (-)HCA. This means that, for every 500mg of Citrin®, you receive a minimum of 250mg of active (-)HCA.

Simply put, Citrin® works! There is no greater tribute to the success of Citrin® than to see the appearance of imitative products.

Millions have already experienced the benefits of Citrin
®. Shouldn't YOU?
