This
extract is derived from the leaves of Andrographis
paniculata, traditionally as a tonic. The
extract and its active constituents, andrographolides
were found to have liver protective properties.
These compounds helped to increase bile flow and
repair chemically induced liver damage, in laboratory
trials1,2. In recent years the role
of Andrographis paniculata in the management
of the common cold has received a lot of attention.
A double blind placebo controlled study performed
in Sweden, with 50 patients treated with a herbal
preparation containing A. paniculata (4
tablets each containing 85 mg A. paniculata
extract were administered thrice a day for 5 days),
produced positive results in terms of relief from
symptoms of the common cold 3.
