A
decade after DSHEA, we are proud of our contributions
to the nutraceutical revolution. We pioneered
the introduction of several healthful botanical
extracts, phytochemicals and nutritional fine
chemicals to the global marketplace and worked
with standards agencies to develop quality criteria
and monographs for these ingredients. Along the
way, we found innovative applications for several
traditional raw materials, which are now patented
or patent pending both in the U.S. and internationally. |
In the early part of 1996, Sabinsa
pioneered the concept of enhancing the bioavailability
of nutritional /dietary supplements with the introduction
of BioPerine®.
Many of you have embraced the use of BioPerine®
(Black pepper extract) and included it into your formulations.
In 1998, we introduced a novel and previously unknown
use for Coleus forskohlii (ForsLean®)
for promotion of lean body mass in weight management.
The response to this product has been overwhelming. We
thank you for your support in the use of these products.
Encouraged by the Nutritional industry,
Sabinsa continues to invest in research on these products
and continues to cover the usage of BioPerine®
and ForsLean® with additional
U.S., European and International patents.
From 1996 until today, many companies have
taken our science (and our Intellectual Property), and
ascribed it to generic material in their formulas. Such
activities continue in light of our open efforts to
educate these companies, and the industry, on intellectual
property rights and patent infringement. It is against
this background that Sabinsa made the decision to seek
legal protection and remedies for our intellectual property
and patent rights.
At no time have we intended to harass the
industry that provides the very basis of our existence.
Again, it is the few companies that continue to ignore
the property rights of others, that infringe on intellectual
property without regard to the owners, that Sabinsa
has decided to take legal action against to protect
our rights.
In the months and years ahead, Sabina’s
commitment to the innovation of new products will continue,
and we seek your understanding of the legal path we
may be compelled to follow at times to protect our intellectual
property rights.
As always, we will continue to foster the
tradition of quality and innovation that you have come
to expect from SABINSA, in the current year and in the
years to come.
I take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy
and Healthy 2004 |

is Heart Healthy Month
A Healthy Heart |
|
| |
| |
Cardiovascular
diseases (CVD) continue to remain the leading cause of
morbidity and mortality in the developed world, with coronary
heart disease (CHD) being rated as the number one killer,
and stroke following as a close third, in the United States.
Over the years, research has established the link between
dietary fats (lipids), lipid transport and metabolism
in the body, atherosclerosis (the progressive narrowing
of the arteries over time), and cardiovascular disease.
High levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol
are particularly correlated with atherosclerosis and
cardiovascular disease, based on evidence from clinical
studies and epidemiological analysis. Multiple risk
factors for cardiovascular disease commonly recognized
in current medical literature include: age (over 45
for men and postmenopause for women), high blood pressure,
diabetes mellitus, Syndrome X (characterized by central
type of obesity, elevated blood triglycerides, hypertension
and abnormal glucose metabolism), genetic predisposition,
serum HDL levels <40 mg/dL, serum lipoprotein (a)
or Lp(a) levels above 20 mg/dL, serum homocysteine levels
>10 nmol/L, the ratio of VLDL cholesterol/triglycerides>0.3,
high concentrations of blood coagulation (clotting)
factors, insulin resistance with hyperinsulinemia, midsection
obesity, high levels of inflammatory compounds like
C-reactive protein, high white blood and red blood cells
counts, deficiency of antioxidant vitamins, cigarette
smoking, alcohol abuse, infection with Chlamydia and
gum disease causing Porphyromonas gingivalis.
A healthy lifestyle with appropriate diet and exercise
regimens in combination with nutritional support with
phytonutrients, mineral nutrients and vitamins is beneficial
in lowering modifiable risk factors. Nutraceuticals
that support healthy cardiac muscular functions, circulation
and serum lipid levels, are beneficial to cardiovascular
health.
These may be combined with nutrients that provide antioxidant
support, blood sugar support, anti-inflammatory support,
digestive support, and immune support, to present comprehensive
formulations to support cardiovascular health.
Ingredients in such formulations could include Gugulipid®
(Commiphora mukul extract), Policosanol, Inula racemosa
extract, Terminalia arjuna extract, CoQ10, Ginger extract,
Curcumin C3Complex® and
bioavailable sources of magnesium, vanadium and selenium.
Bioperine® added to such
formulations would help enhance the absorption and bioavailability
of these nutrients.

ingredients and formulation guidelines for cardiovascular
support.

A Focus
on Quality |
|
| |
| |
We
begin a three part series on the significance of quality
in the manufacture and supply of herbal ingredients. Herein,
our scientists unravel the intricacies of the quality
chain, from raw material sourcing through finished ingredient
evaluation. Sourcing and authentication of raw herbs is
covered in the first part of this series. The
role of quality control starts from the stage of identification
of raw materials.
At our facilities, all herbal raw materials are procured
from approved vendors after conducting vendor audit,
to ensure the supply of consistent quality raw materials.
We scrutinize the documentation of their quality system
and storage facilities. In most cases a second supplier
is also identified.
Firstly, botanicals are authenticated for genus and
species, by a qualified botanist. An in-house herbarium
facilitates the comparison of raw materials at any given
time.
Once our botanist approves the herbal raw material,
it is subjected to experimental extraction to test the
yield, identity and quantity of actives, using sophisticated
instrumentation (HPLC, GC, UV, IR). Raw materials will
be used for commercial extraction only if they pass
these tests, and conform to our specifications.
A schematic representation of the above steps is presented:
