Sabinsa
Corporation assigned patent on the use of curcuminoids
|
|
| |
| |
The
Sabinsa Corporation was assigned yet another U.S. patent
(# 5,861,415, January, 19, 1999), titled "Bioprotectant
composition , method of use and extraction process of
Curcuminoids" Curcuminoids have been found to have
antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal,antiparasitic,
anti-mutagen, anticancer and detoxifying properties. The
present invention is directed to compositions containing
specific ranges of three curcuminoids, i.e. curcumin,
demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin, extracted
from roots of tumeric (Curcuma longa). This composition
has been found to have dual-pronged antioxidant action,
viz., preventing the formation of free radicals as well
as intervening in their propagation. As most degenerative
disease conditions are attributed to free radical chain
reactions, the role of curcuminoids in health maintenance
is becoming increasingly relevant.
Curcuminoids are recognized for their broad biological
activity and safety of use. The biological activity
of curcuminoids can best be described by the word "protective".
Many of the anti-inflammatory and chemopreventive properties
of curcumin may be related to the unique antioxidant
properties of curcuminoids. It should be noted that
some other natural antioxidants, which have been screened
together with curcuminoids for biological activity,
do not offer combined prevention and intervention action,
with reference to free radical mediated reactions.
Prevention and intervention result in the totality
of protective qualities. Since curcuminoids may protect
the integrity of biological systems by preventing the
free-radical assault and by intervening to stop the
assault, it is proposed that curcuminoids and any similarly
acting compounds be classed as a "bioprotectant".

Gugulipid®
: Importance of proper analytical methodology &
the 10% Gugulipid Myth
Gugulipid®, a registered
trademark of Sabinsa Corporation, is the standardized
extract of the oleogum resin of Commiphora mukul,
an Indian medicinal plant. The active ingredients
responsible for the use of the plant in the maintenance
of healthy cholesterol levels, are the guggulsterones,
specifically guggulsterone E and guggulsterone Z.
In view of the maximum guggulsterones level of 6.0%
specified by the Indian Pharmacopeia for soft extracts,
it is probable that powdered guggul products which
claim an active ingredient level in excess of 6.0%
may be crude and unpurified extracts. In clinical
studies, the administration of crude (unpurified)
guggul caused mild side effects such as skin rashes,
diarrhea and irregular menstruation. There are no
reports of these undesirable effects with a purified
and appropriately standardized extract.
Lactospore®
Lactospore®, a registered
trade mark of Sabinsa Corporation, is a probiotic
which produces the desirable L(+) form of lactic acid.
This microorganism, protected by nature's own micro-encapsulation
system, germinates into viable cells in the intestine,
which can then proliferate.
The probiotic of choice, Lactospore®
requires no refrigeration, is shelf-stable and resistant
to heat (up to 60 C), bile and stomach acid.
Please call Sabinsa Corporation for free copies of
both publications.

Mucuna
pruriens Extract
Mucuna pruriens is valued therapeutically
for its L-Dopa content. L-Dopa is 3-Hydroxytyrosine
or 3-(3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) or 2-Amino-3 (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)
propionic acid.
L-Dopa (UV max 280 nm)
The seeds contain L-Dopa along with its
precursors such as catcholamines and their congeners
which have similar structures.
Catecholamine (UV max : 275 to 280
nm)
When an extract of Mucuna pruriens is
prepared, along with L-Dopa, other chemically similar
compounds are also extracted. All these compounds
have the aromatic catecholamine structure and therefore
will strongly absorb UV light at around 280 nm where
L-Dopa absorption is maximum. When UV absorption measurements
are taken, the results indicate the cumulative value
of all these compounds, including L-Dopa.
Thus UV assay yields:
L-Dopa + All other similar compounds
Scientists at Sabinsa Corporation have
now developed a validated HPLC method which can quantitate
L-Dopa levels in the extract accurately. Extracts
standardized for 10% and 15% L-Dopa are now available.
Calcium sennosides
Senna (Cassia senna L.) has a long history
of use as a herbal laxative. Calcium sennosides, a
recent addition to Sabinsa’s extensive range
of herbal extracts offer the active principles of
senna in the form of their calcium salts. This extract
is standardized for a minimum of 20% sennosides.
Rosemary Extract
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) has applications
as an antioxidant, both internally and externally.
The leaves contain potent antioxidant compounds such
as carnosol, carnosic acid, rosmarinic acid and ursolic
acid.
Laboratory studies have established the inhibitory
effects of rosemary extract on tumor generation and
mutagenesis. The antimicrobial effects of rosemary
extract have also been studied. Additionally, Rosemary
extract provides antioxidant action as well as helps
preserve skin texture, when used topically.
Sabinsa Corporation provides a standardized extract
containing a minimum of 6.0% Carnosic acid, 1.0% Rosmarinic
acid and 1.5% Ursolic acid.

Sabinsa
Corporation explores the herbal market in China |
|
| |
| |
Minghua
Nie, International Marketing Analyst at Sabinsa Corporation,
recently visited China to explore sources of various
herbal extracts and nutritional raw materials. Minghua,
who joined Sabinsa Corporation in 1998, holds a Masters
degree in Business Administration from Tennessee State
University. He has several years of marketing experience
including research, international marketing and international
relations, with particular reference to China.
During this trip, Minghua visited more than ten major
business establishments, which included both manufacturers
and suppliers of herbal extracts and nutritional raw
materials. Through detailed discussions with key management
personnel in these companies, Minghua obtained a glimpse
of the Chinese herbal industry in terms of its manufacturing
infrastructure, distribution channels, management structure,
competitive pricing, government regulations and technical
capabilities.

United
States Senator Orrin Hatch and Todd Norton |
|
| |
| |
On February
18, 1999, Todd Norton, Executive Vice President of Sabinsa
Corporation was invited by Senator Orrin Hatch-UT, to
participate in a "Business Leadership Roundtable"
in Provo, Utah. Among the attendees were several executives
from other nutritional supplement companies. One of the
issues receiving considerable attention had to do with
strengthening legislation pertaining to the dietary supplement
industry. While Senator Hatch acknowledged our past successes,
primariliy the passage of DSHEA, he said the fight was
far from over. He asked that our industry continue to
be his "eyes and ears" and communicate to him
any issues that might impede the progress made in recent
years. |
