Glucosamine Sulfate : Which is better: the K+ or Na+ salt?

Glucosamine Sulfate is used in the treatment of osteoarthritis and plays a role in cartilage protection. There are several reasons why the potassium salt of Glucosamine Sulfate is preferred.
  1. Significantly lower levels of salivary K+ have been correlated with increased incidence of dental decay and gingivitis observed in patients with juvenile chronic arthritis1 and rheumatoid arthritis2.

  2. In patients with rheumatoid arthritis, the total body K+ (TBK) values were significantly reduced, as was the ratio of observed predicted TBK. This ratio is used as an index of skeletal muscle mass3. Skeletal muscle mass may determine the rate of bone formation4 .

  3. Observations 1 and 2 validate an earlier proposal which advocates the use of K+ salts to treat rheumatoid arthritis5.

  4. As a nutrient, K+ is necessary for the muscles to hold back and control the flow of urine, modulate peristalsis, stabilize the nervous system and stimulate endocrine functions. Potassium deficiency leading to unbalanced sodium levels could be fatal to diabetics and has been correlated with junk food diets which induce symptoms such as muscle weakness and extreme fatigue6.

  5. Sodium is contraindicated in patients with hypertension.

Glucosamine Sulfate when used in combination with potassium salts is therefore more effective in the treatment of arthritic conditions, as it would simultaneously replenish depleted K+ levels.

  New Products : BGOV

Sabinsa has recently introduced a new form of organically bound vanadium, Bisglycinato-oxovanadium (BGOV), to its product list. BGOV is a vanadium complex with the amino acid glycine and contains 23% elemental vanadium (anhydrous basis). The choice of glycine as a carrier of vanadium has been made based on its diverse role in metabolic processes.

Vanadium belongs to the group of biologically important "transition" elements. Apart from its potential role as a building material of bones and teeth, vanadium has been shown to have a promising application as a substitute for insulin through the activation of insulin receptors. Vanadium is highly valued by body builders and athletes who claim that it increases their energy levels and endurance.

The organic forms of vanadium are recognized as being safer, more bioavailable and therapeutically more effective than the inorganic sulfate form.

Boswellia Serrata : Use in ulcerative colitis

Boswellic acids, the biologically active ingredients of Boswellia serrata gum resin, are used to treat inflammatory disorders.

A recent report published in the European Journal of Medical Research (Jan 20, 1997) showed that treatment with Boswellia serrata gum resin induced remission of symptoms in 82% of the ulcerative colitis patients studied. This treatment compared favorably with conventional treatment using NSAIDS.

Boswellin® supplied by Sabinsa Corporation is standardized for 70% boswellic acids.
